We visit Anglo-Boer, Boer-Zulu, and Zulu-Anglo sites such as Utrecht, Talana, Blood River (Dundee), Dingane’s Kraal and Piet Retief’s gravesite.
The group rides dirt on the first and part of second day . After Piet Retief’s grave site visit, we hit the tar. Multiple twisty roads await, through Nkandla Forest where we stop for awesome vistas. Into the Tugela Valley we go, We cross the Tugela River, swim in a hot spring, ride a magnificent pass to Kranskop, and overnight at an 103-year-old hotel. In Pietermaritzburg, we visit the Church of the Covenant (Geloftekerk). We travel through the Natal Midlands and experience the Drakensberg. We see the Blaaukrans and Boesmans Rive massacres monument. We then proceed to our last evening’s accommodation.
We ride 18% on dirt roads farmers use daily, except Green to Orange routes. 82% of the Adventure is on tar roads.
Day 1
We meet in Wakkerstroom at 16:00. We prepare our Adventure steeds for the next day’s Adventure riding. We book in, have supper, get to know each other, and discuss the next day’s route.
Day 2
Up early. Our first full day of Adventure riding. Today we ride dirtwhere ! Breakfast at 07:00. We leave at 08:00 for our first stop Utrecht, we visit a Museum and Statutes, then more Adventurous dirt roads onwards to the Talana Museum in Dundee( We find Anglo Boer/Zulu. Boer/Zulu battles and many more experiences), We buy our meat here(Remember your small cooler bag) Again we take the Adventurous road option and proceed to Blood River/eNcome for lunch.
We become part of the happenings. A “food for thought” experience. Also our place of stay, the evening we relax and braai. We discuss the next day’s Adventurous route. Sitting around the fire we find ourselves marveling in the flood of information and happenings we experienced this day .
Day 3
Breakfast at 07:00. Leave at 08:00.More dirt Adventurous roads await. Heading for Dingane’s kraal/ Piet Retief’s gravesite. From here on its paved roads, many a twisty await you. We have lunch in small towns or at fuel stations. Up and down the twisty roads take us. We stop at a lookout point where we regroup and take in the Tugela Valley. Riding through the stunning, Nkandla Forest is a highlight.
Crossing the Tugela River we stop at Shu Shu Hot Springs. We ride an awesome little pass( No chicken strip pass), through areas rich in German settler’s heritage and arrive at New Hanover’s historical The Travellers Rest at about 17:00 (The history of this venue is an adventure on its own). We meet the locals around the bar have supper and discuss the next day’s Adventures and routes.
Day 4
Breakfast at 07:00. We visit the Church of the Covenant (Geloftekerk). Onwards a different adventure awaits, the Midlands for a leisurely ride, at Nottingham Road we have Lunch. Here we get our braai goodies for the night. Tonight we braai !!,
We turn towards the Drakensberg mountains. We ride on through the area where 3 battles were fought (Boer/Zulu) prior to Bloodrivier, onto the Blaaukrans Monument.
Onwards, Our adventure to our last stay around Winterton and arrive at approximately 16:0,0. Fill up, Book in make a fire and have our braai. Around the fire, we reminisce about our Adventure and discuss our route home.
Day 5
We have breakfast and head home. See you at the next Experience!
