Heritage and Twisties Adventure Riding Experience

Day 1

We meet in Wakkerstroom at 16:00 and prepare our adventure motorbikes for the next day’s riding. We check in at our overnight accommodation, have supper, get to know each other, and discuss the next day’s route.

Day 2

Up early. Our first full day of adventure riding. Today we ride dirt! Breakfast at 07:00. We leave at 08:00 for our first stop, where we visit a museum and take adventurous dirt roads to another museum.

We enjoy learning more about historic Anglo-Zulu and Boer-Zulu battles throughout the day. Another interesting road takes us to the Battle of Blood River heritage site and Ncome Museum for lunch.

We become part of past experiences and stay overnight. In the evening, we relax, braai and discuss the day’s adventurous route. We also discuss the next day’s route. Sitting around the fire, we find ourselves marvelling at the flood of information and the day’s events.

Day 3

Breakfast at 07:00. We leave at 08:00 as more dirt roads are waiting. The group heads for Dingane’s Kraal and Piet Retief’s gravesite. Now we hit paved roads with the twisties you’ve been waiting for! We have lunch in small towns or at fuel stations.

We ride up and down twisty roads with our adventure motorbikes and stop at lookout points to regroup and appreciate the Tugela Valley. Riding through the stunning Nkandla Forest is a highlight.

After crossing the Tugela River, we stop at a hot spring. Then we ride an awesome little pass (no chicken strip pass!) through areas rich in German settler heritage and arrive at New Hanover at approximately 17:00.

New Hanover’s history is an adventure on its own. We meet the locals around the bar, have supper, and discuss the next day’s adventures and routes.

Day 4

Breakfast at 07:00. We visit the Church of the Covenant (Geloftekerk) in Pietermaritzburg, then onwards, as a different adventure awaits. We take a leisurely ride to the KZN Midlands and stop at Nottingham Road for lunch. Here we get our braai goodies for the night, as tonight we braai!!

After lunch, we turn towards the Drakensberg mountains, and ride through an area where three Boer-Zulu battles were fought prior to the Battle of Bloodriver. We ride onwards to the Blaaukrans Monument.

We arrive in Winterton at approximately 16:00 for our last night’s stay. We fill up our adventure motorcycles, check in at our accommodation, and get the fire going for our evening braai. Around the fire, we reminisce about our experiences and discuss our route home.
